Fun Home is the Tony Award-winning musical adapted from lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel’s groundbreaking graphic autobiography. Alison’s upbringing was a bit unusual, playing in the family’s funeral parlor, lovingly nicknamed, the “fun home,” while she and her family tiptoed around her father, Bruce, a particular, brilliant, and temperamental man whose secrets and self-loathing consume him. Moving between past and present, a now grown Alison reflects on her past, she struggles to make sense of her relationship with her father, while also reliving memories of her own coming of age, self-discovery, and self-acceptance as she learns to embrace her identity in a way her father could not.
New Light Theatre is committed to bringing light to the darkness of the world, to raising awareness and support for organizations that illuminate, and to deepening our empathy and connection with one another through meaningful artistic work. In accordance with this mission, Fun Home will partner with NAMI Delaware, a fully inclusive mental health organization that provides awareness, advocacy, support, and education to Delawareans.
