A statement of support from the Theatre Philadelphia team:
Theatre Philadelphia sends our sympathy, solidarity, and support to the University of the Arts community of alumni, students, staff, and faculty at the news of the university’s closure.
Arts education is necessary and pivotal in continuously cultivating generations of artists. For many years, the University of the Arts has brought not only the Philly theatre community but also the Philadelphia arts community, in general, so many brilliant artists. Theatre Philadelphia is thankful for the dancers, storytellers, visual artists, technical designers, directors, actors, musicians, and so many more who have contributed significantly to the Greater Philadelphia theatre ecosystem.
As we listen to and converse with local artists and art organizations, Theatre Philadelphia will continue to share resources through our social media platforms such as employment and funding opportunities, free or discounted theatre experiences, and other education programs and resources directly benefiting the UArts community of students, staff, and faculty in this transition. These will be continually shared in our free weekly “What's On Stage” newsletter under “Theatre Resources”. In order to assist faculty and staff with finding new employment, Theatre Philadelphia’s freely-accessible job board will also extend our thirty-day listings to sixty days.
Theatre Philadelphia also develops programming geared towards the next generation of artists found in Greater Philadelphia University's undergrad arts programs. We encourage University of the Arts theatre undergraduates to apply for the upcoming Spring 2025 Ubuntu Young Artist fellowship when applications become available, as they will be eligible whether or not they find placement in another undergraduate program. Our House of Plays program, in partnership with Temple University’s Theatre Underground, will also look to welcome University of the Arts students to masterclass opportunities with local Philly Theatre artists.
“One of the most vital ways we sustain ourselves is by building communities of resistance, places where we know we are not alone.” - Bell Hooks
