Germantown Friends School is seeking an experienced Teaching Artist to work with students in our Lower School (LS) and Middle School (MS) programs. The LS Theatre Movement Arts Program at GFS takes a play-based approach to teaching and learning. With a focus on healthy relationships to self and others, we work to develop physical skills and awareness in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. The focus of our Middle School Theatre Arts Program is to balance introductory skill development with community and character building. It is our goal to engage students in new forms of creative expression while at the same time developing and reinforcing positive relationships among their peer group. As a department, we strive for a collaborative approach to art-making; it is in this spirit of collaboration that we seek to grow our team of Teaching Artists. Specifically, we are looking for a teacher of Theatre, Movement, and Improv to work with students 2nd-8th grade and support our middle school teaching team in program/production delivery. 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implementation of developmentally appropriate Theatre/Movement Curriculum for students as young as 2nd grade and as old as 8th grade. 
  • Encourage and engage students toward participation and personal expression, most of whom will be new to the physical arts, dance, and/or theatre.
  • Collaborate with Lower School classroom teachers in the presentation of (2) class plays and/or performance projects and in the development of meaningful theatre/movement opportunities that intersect with elements across the curriculum. 
  • Participation in Middle School Theatre Movement Arts programming and instruction, including teaching a Movement and/or Improvisation and working toward student performance and presentation
  • Partner with Theatre Department teaching artists in the presentation of theatrical productions and community performances across several divisions of the school
  • Be an active participant in the life of the school by attending faculty meetings, professional development, and required trainings. 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be an energetic and creative artist, enthusiastic about sharing their passion with young people 
  • Possess personal awareness, ability, and desire to work in a diverse and inclusive Quaker school environment
  • Have experience working with a range of ages, including young children as well as middle school age students
  • Possess skills in developmentally appropriate classroom management and behavior modification
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or Equivalent Experience and/or Training  
  • Have outstanding communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
