Performance Labs at People’s Light are our most advanced training programs, open to high school-age actors by audition only. A Performance Lab is a unique hybrid educational experience: A conservatory-style training program with People’s Light Teaching Artists to develop students' skills, from performing Shakespearean text to character building, combined with rehearsal for their role in Twelfth Night. These masterclasses will be scheduled in advance and in addition to rehearsal calls. Enrollment is required; need-based scholarships are available.
The 6-8 accepted students in this Performance Lab will all share the role of Fabian, rotating in the performance schedule to perform 1 to 2 shows per week, with a stipend paid for each performance.
All events take place at People’s Light in Malvern, in the Congdon Center/Steinbright.

FABIAN actors are required to prepare and present a one-minute memorized monologue. We strongly recommend choosing a monologue from one of Shakespeare’s comedies, or another comic classical piece written in verse. If Shakespeare is new to you, you may prepare a one-minute comic monologue from any play that shows you to your best advantage. If your monologue is not from Shakespeare, the director would also like you to choose one piece from this online database and familiarize yourself with it. The second piece may be not fully memorized, but you should be comfortable repeating the language and feel ready to be coached in the room.
NOTE: Teen actors may also audition for Performance Lab: A Christmas Carol at the same call. If you are auditioning for both FABIAN and PETER/PETRA (A Christmas Carol), please prepare the required song and one classical monologue.
All actors should please bring a clear, current photo of themselves; professional headshots are welcome but not required. We encourage performers with previous theatre, vocal, and/or dance experience to bring a resume, but this is also not required.
Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your audition block to complete some simple paperwork.

Never had a professional audition before? Think it might be easier to avoid nerves with a preview of what to expect? These free sessions are meant to orient young actors to what will be required on their audition day: introducing the steps in the process, what directors and theatre staff are looking for when they meet a new actor, and how to prepare in advance.
Please note that these are not acting/singing classes, and actors will not be coached on their individual monologues or songs. The orientation will ensure they know a friendly face at the theatre, have practiced introducing themselves, and have answers to the most common questions. On audition day, actors can focus on the joy of showing their best work!
During the hour-long workshop, People’s Light staff will also be available to answer individual questions from parents/guardians.
