Performance Lab Expectations

Performance Labs at People’s Light are our most advanced training programs, open to high school-age actors by audition only. A Performance Lab is a unique hybrid educational experience: A conservatory-style training program with People’s Light Teaching Artists to develop students' performance skills, from musical theatre to character building, combined with rehearsal for their role in A Christmas Carol. These masterclasses will be scheduled in advance and in addition to rehearsal calls. Enrollment is required; need-based scholarships are available.

The 6-8 accepted students in this Performance Lab will all share the role of Peter/Petra, rotating in the performance schedule to perform 1 to 2 shows per week, with a stipend paid for each performance.

Audition Material

All PETER/PETRA actors are required to prepare and present a one-minute memorized monologue, and sing “Tiny Tim’s Folk Song.”

  • Audition sheet music – coming May 23
  • Demo recording of the song, sung by the Music Director – coming May 23
  • Piano track only, to accompany audition – coming May 23
  • A reference recording of Tiny Tim's Folk Song, as performed by previous youth and adult cast members

The monologue can be a piece (or excerpt) of actor's own choice; actors are welcome to use one of the text options available HERE. Actors should prepare their monologues in their own natural speaking voices. Actors who are invited to callbacks may also be invited to experiment with a British accent.

NOTE: Teen actors may also audition for Performance Lab: Twelfth Night at the same call. If you are auditioning for both A Christmas Carol and Twelfth Night, please prepare 1 song and one classical monologue.

All actors should please bring a clear, current photo of themselves; professional headshots are welcome but not required. We encourage performers with previous theatre, vocal, and/or dance experience to bring a resume, but this is also not required.

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your audition block to complete some simple paperwork.

Questions about auditioning? Attend one of our FREE audition workshops (see below for more info) or contact Liz Filios at [email protected].

Optional: Audition 101 Orientation Workshops

Never had a professional audition before? Think it might be easier to avoid nerves with a preview of what to expect? These free sessions are meant to orient young actors to what will be required on their audition day: introducing the steps in the process, what directors and theatre staff are looking for when they meet a new actor, and how to prepare in advance.

Please note that these are not acting/singing classes, and actors will not be coached on their individual monologues or songs. The orientation will ensure they know a friendly face at the theatre, have practiced introducing themselves, and have answers to the most common questions. On audition day, actors can focus on the joy of showing their best work!

During the hour-long workshop, People’s Light staff will also be available to answer individual questions from parents/guardians.

Workshops are FREE! Advance RSVPs are greatly appreciated to help us prepare for these events.
