Our technical directors work in unique venues, juggling a number of diverse productions simultaneously to create unforgettable evenings for our audiences and artists.

(Please note, this job has different expectations than a typical technical director. This role is specifically in charge of technical systems. More details below.)

The job includes:

  • Provide direction and assume responsibility for lighting, sound, projection, rigging and other technical systems at assigned home venue(s).
    • Provide technical support to other venues besides home venue when needed and as scheduling permits. 
  • In collaboration with the PM and other TDs, participate in pre-production meetings to ensure all staff are prepared for load-in, load-out, and performances, and all necessary materials and equipment have been secured in advance.
  • Responsible for designing rep plots, lighting plots & speaker plots and creating necessary rentals lists in collaboration with the Production Manager.
  • Training Stage Managers on the technical systems of their designated venue during the lead up to the festival, as well as supporting stage managers throughout the run of the festival.
  • Oversee and lead all venue load in, strike, and load out, and coordinate with Production Manager to build staff calls
  • Be available to help troubleshoot technical malfunctions and other issues throughout the festival and on rotation with other Technical Directors. 
  • Support strike and rental return as needed through October 1, 2026. 

Necessary Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a technical director in a live entertainment setting.
  • Diverse knowledge of various technical systems including lighting, sound, projection, rigging and more.
    • Proficiency in QLab for sound, lighting, and projection
  • Multi-tasking and time management skills for individual and group projects.
  • Consistently practice safe work habits including the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and reporting unsafe situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with independent artists and stage managers alike.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule during the month of September, including nights and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Physically able to complete tasks on levels (low level/kneeling, mid-level/squatting, high-level/standing) and must be able to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Familiarity with the fast-paced nature of a Fringe Festival and touring shows.
  • Understanding of Circus production including rigging and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of Cannonball Festival and enthusiasm for seeing independent artists thrive.

Important Dates

  • July 1 — Technical intake + venue assessments
  • July 15 — Technical design draft
  • July 31 — Technical design locked (plots, layouts, rental orders finalized)
  • Aug 24 (AAI) / Aug 31 (Icebox) — Venue load-in begins
  • Sept 1 — Tech rehearsals begin at AAI and Box Spring
  • Sept 5 — Tech rehearsals begin at Icebox
  • Sept 8–27 — Performance run support (daily tech rehearsals, maintenance, troubleshooting)
  • Sept 28–29 — Strike

$3000 for Icebox Technical Director (Responsible for Icebox Project Space and Box Spring Gallery) $4000 for Asian Arts Initiative Technical Director (Responsible for AAI Project Space, AAI Black Box Theater and AAI Third Floor)
