Walnut Street Theatre Teaching Artist (Daytime Hours)

Position: Theatre Teaching Artist
Hours: Daytime hours, after school hours, flexible schedule (typically Monday through Friday)

Walnut Street Theatre believes that theatre is a profound tool for creating connections. Above all we strive to create new opportunities for success for our students, and to increase self confidence, inspire creativity, strengthen collaborative skills, improve learning, and expand an individual's world-view.

The Walnut Street Theatre Education Department is seeking local Teaching Artists with daytime/after school availability to participate in our vast in-house and off-site artistic programming. These artists should be comfortable teaching grades K - 12 within the Philadelphia School District and beyond. Join our team and lead engaging, fun, and educational theatre classes during daytime hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead creative and educational theatre classes for students of various ages and experience levels, fostering a love for the arts and building performance skills.
  • Design and implement lesson plans that are interactive, collaborative, and cater to diverse learning styles.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel empowered to express themselves.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and administration to ensure successful programming.

Qualifications:

  • A background in theatre (BA or higher preferred), with a strong understanding of performance, drama, and arts education.
  • Previous experience teaching theatre to children, teens, or adults, with an emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and performance techniques.
  • Ability to develop age-appropriate lesson plans and activities that engage students in both the process and the product of theatre.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse groups of students, staff, and parents.
  • Flexibility and creativity in adapting lessons to meet the needs of different learners.
  • A passion for the arts, education, and creating meaningful experiences for students.

Additional Skills/Experience:

  • Experience working in school settings or with after-school programs.
  • Familiarity with a variety of theatre techniques (e.g., improvisation, scene study, voice, movement, etc.).
  • Up to date Child Clearances
