Delaware Theatre Company's SUMMER on STAGE program has openings for teaching artists and teaching artist apprentices and we encourage you to apply*! Delaware Theatre Company is a member of the League of Regional Theatres (LORT) and the only professional regional theatre in Delaware. We are an easy commute from Philly as we are right off I-95 and the theatre is 2 blocks from the Wilmington/Septa Train Station (WIL Line), and an easy commute from Philly!

Summer on Stage is a full-day (9:00am - 4:00pm) theatre arts enrichment program designed for students (rising third graders through fifteen years) to explore and develop their creativity through classes, games, and collaborative script building.  The program is divided into two sessions:

  • Session I: June 30 – July 18 (no camp on July 4) at Delaware Theatre Company in Wilmington
  • Session II: July 21 – August 8 at St. Edmond's Academy in N. Wilmington

Each session culminates in a final sharing performance, where students present their work through skits, 10-minute plays, and/or stage-related crafts. These performances celebrate the skills and creativity developed throughout the session. 

SUMMER ON STAGE TEACHING ARTIST

Position Summary:

During the summer of 2025, instructors will lead a diverse range of classes, which may include—though are not limited to—acting, improvisation, writing, voice and diction, stage movement, story and script development, stage combat (if certified), crafts, rehearsals, performance, and other specialized areas. Instruction may span from one to eight weeks. Selected instructors may also be invited to direct one of our “Shareformance” productions.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, Teaching Artists will mentor Teaching Artist Fellows throughout the camp day by co-teaching, observing sessions, and offering constructive feedback. 

Essential Job Duties

  • Follow lesson plan structure and uphold a positive, inclusive, and creative camp environment that fosters growth, creativity, and connection
  • Lead and teach classes
  • Teach theatre skills and awareness in an age-appropriate way
  • Direct youth in writing and rehearsing original skits/plays, or creating plays from published stories, folklore, or fairy tales
  • Assist with lesson planning
  • Mentor Teaching Artist Fellows through active collaboration and feedback
  • Collaborate with Delaware Theatre Company Education Staff and fellow professional artists

Qualifications:

  • A BA or BFA in Theatre is preferred; equivalent experience and/or certification in early childhood education, education, fine arts, or performing arts is also welcomed.
  • Professional experience working with children at the elementary and/or secondary school level
  • Passion for arts education
  • All teaching artists will be required to pass state and federal background checks prior to start of work

SUMMER ON STAGE TEACHING ARTIST APPRENTICE

Teaching Artist APPRENTICE
The Teaching Artist Apprentice (TAA) at Delaware Theatre Company offers emerging artists the opportunity to develop their teaching skills in a hands-on, supportive environment. Designed for those interested in becoming a teaching artist, the program combines curriculum-based instruction with real-world experience.

Over the course of the summer, Fellows will serve as camp counselors for DTC’s Summer on Stage, taking on roles as teaching assistants and group leaders. They will progress through stages of learning by observing, assisting, co-teaching, and eventually leading their own activities. In addition, Fellows will receive ongoing professional development and mentorship throughout the program.

Ideal candidates are pursuing or have completed a degree in theatre or education or have equivalent experience. Applicants should have experience working with children and a strong interest in teaching theatre to youth. Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required. All TAA's will be required to pass state and federal background checks prior to start of work

How To Apply

Compensation:

  • Teaching Artists are Independent Contractors. Pay rate begins at $18 per teaching hour and is based on experience. Rates for preparation to be considered.
  • Teaching Artist Apprentices are Independent Contractors, a stipend of $400 per week will be provided.
