Team Care Planning: Black Maternal Health Case
Dates/Hours: 2-hour training session (date: February 11th 9AM – 11AM), and a 2-hour simulation run with students (Friday, February 20th 8:30AM – 10AM), for a total of 4 hours.
Demographic: We are looking for 2 people who identify as Black Women (age 20-40) to play the role of Melody Brown. We are also looking for 1 person who can play Melody’s partner, Alex, with unspecified gender and race (age 25-40).
Where: Thomas Jefferson University Center for Interprofessional Practice & Education (JCIPE)
Setting: The simulation setting will be in a clinic. Melody is a patient who has recently been diagnosed with gestational hypertension (high blood pressure), and her care team is concerned it could develop into preeclampsia, resulting in early labor. She and her partner Alex are meeting with her care team to develop a birthing plan. Melody experienced a previous traumatic birth, which plays a role in her birthing preferences.
The object of this scenario: Students training in different health professions will utilize the tools learned in their assigned pre-work to practice navigating a team meeting and develop a birthing plan with Melody and Alex, while understanding the health disparities Melody may be facing as a Black woman.
After completion of the scenario, the actors/Standardized Patients (SPs) will provide feedback during a debriefing session with students on how the simulation went.
