Stage Manager and Costume Manager: The Waterfront Journals

Rushmore Labs

Post Date: May 26, 2025

Hiring back of house roles for "The Waterfront Journals by David Wojnarowicz." Adapted from the book of the same name by acclaimed queer artist and writer David Wojnarowicz, this series of monologues offers a raw, poetic exploration of life on the margins in 1970s and 1980s America. Drawn from street corners, bus stops, and all-night diners, the stories are told by hustlers, runaways, lovers, and outsiders - weaving a tapestry of desire, resilience, and survival. This production brings The Waterfront Journals to the stage for the first time in decades. Four performances will take place during the 2025 Philadelphia Fringe Festival at a venue in Eraserhood.

Directed and produced by RJ and Rachel Rushmore, with the support of the Estate of David Wojnarowicz and the David Wojnarowicz Foundation.

Pay is $200/performance, for a total of $800. Production anticipates two table readings over Zoom, four rehearsals, and four performances.

Positions:

Stage Manager / Lighting and Sound Tech: To oversee all aspects of timing, cues, and technical operations during performances. Responsibilities include tracking actor entrances and transitions, creating a simple lighting and sound plan, running all lighting and sound cues, and ensuring the smooth execution of each show. Organizational skills, calm under pressure, and familiarity with Fringe-style productions are essential.

Costume Manager / Dresser: To oversee the costume needs for six actors, each portraying 4-5 characters. Costumes will be simple, drawing from 1970s-1980s casual wear (primarily thrifted or repurposed garments). Responsibilities include collaborating with the creative team and cast to select and assemble character-appropriate looks, organizing and maintaining costumes during and between performances, assisting actors with quick changes backstage, and managing light laundry or repairs as needed. The role is a mix of stylist, dresser, and backstage coordinator - ideal for someone who enjoys creative problem-solving and helping bring character to life through clothing. A modest costume budget will be available.
