Employment Range: September 1 – October 7, 2025 (may not be called each day)
Note: All scenic construction must be completed by first rehearsal on October 7. Tech rehearsals run October 24–28, and carpenters may be asked to assist with notes or adjustments.

Position Overview:
Passage Theatre is seeking up to three (3) skilled Scenic Carpenters for the build and installation of our Fall 2025 production: a double-header presentation of Amiri Baraka’s Dutchman and The Slave. This production features two distinct sets mounted on a 16-foot turntable, requiring strong construction skills, creative problem-solving, and attention to detail. This is a seasonal position running through October 7, with a hard deadline to complete all scenic elements by first rehearsal. Additional work during tech week (October 24–28) may be available for touch-ups and notes and for strike during the week of Nov 17-21.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Interpret and execute scenic construction drawings and technical plans
  • Build platforms, flats, and scenic units using wood, metal, and other materials
  • Assist in the construction, assembly, and fine-tuning of the 16’ turntable revolve
  • Participate in scenic load-in, installation, and strike at Mill Hill Playhouse
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and accurately
  • Maintain a clean and safe work and performance space
  • Collaborate closely with the Technical Director and scenic designer
  • Meet production deadlines and uphold high standards of craftsmanship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous scenic carpentry experience in professional or educational theater
  • Experience working with turntables or kinetic scenery (preferred but not required)
  • Proficient in common scenic construction methods and materials
  • Comfortable using a variety of power tools, saws, drills, and fastening systems
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, work on ladders and lifts (reasonable accommodations will be made for qualified individuals with disabilities)
  • Strong communicator, problem solver, and team collaborator
  • Ability to work independently and stay on schedule

Work Environment:
Work will take place at the historic Mill Hill Playhouse. This is a deadline-driven project, so some evening or weekend hours may be required. Passage Theatre values a supportive, inclusive, and safe work environment and welcomes applicants of all abilities.
