Lead Carpenter

Flannel & Hammer

Post Date: Aug 5, 2025

Flannel & Hammer is seeking a Lead Carpenter to join our scenic fabrication team.
This is a full-time leadership role that blends hands-on scenic carpentry with daily shop management. The Lead Carpenter is responsible for staying actively engaged in fabrication while also directing a small team of carpenters, coordinating workflow, and maintaining clear communication with Technical Directors throughout each project.

Our shop produces scenery for 3–8 theatrical productions each month, often with overlapping schedules and shifting timelines. We’re looking for someone who understands the rhythm and urgency of theatrical production—someone who can anticipate needs, organize labor effectively, and help their crew stay focused and efficient as builds move toward install.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret technical drawings and fabricate scenic elements accurately and efficiently
  • Assign daily tasks and support workflow for a team of 2–6 carpenters
  • Maintain high standards of construction quality and shop safety
  • Track progress against build schedules and proactively flag delays or issues
  • Communicate regularly with Technical Directors about project status and needs
  • Identify and report design or material concerns early in the process
  • Encourage accurate tracking of material usage and labor time within the crew
  • Ensure tools and equipment are used properly, safely, and maintained
  • Mentor carpenters and support their technical and professional development
  • Coordinate with the Scenic Charge for smooth handoffs to the paint department
  • When needed, participate in installation teams for onsite load-ins or show builds

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in theatrical scenery construction or production carpentry
  • Strong scenic carpentry skills, including wood and basic metal fabrication
  • Proficient in MIG welding (or confident learning quickly to meet shop standards)
  • Comfortable lifting up to 80 lbs and performing physically demanding tasks
  • Experience managing or mentoring a team in a shop or build environment
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize under shifting deadlines
  • Clear and professional communication style, especially in high-pressure moments

Preferred (Additional) Qualifications

  • Familiarity with theatrical rigging practices
  • Experience tracking or helping crews track material and labor consumption
  • Background in tool maintenance, shop organization, or inventory systems
  • Experience coordinating with paint departments during production builds
  • Comfortable driving box trucks (up to 26’) for deliveries and installations

How To Apply

To apply, please send the following to [email protected]:

  • A brief cover letter introducing yourself and your interest in the position
  • Your resume or work history
  • (Optional) Any portfolio samples or photos of previous scenic work

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting August 8th. We’re aiming to fill the position by mid-to-late August, but we’re flexible for the right candidate.
