Location: Camden, NJ (Greater Philadelphia Area)
*Remote Applications accepted.
Job Type: Commissioned Contract
Company Name: Camden Rep
We are in the process of developing The Real Housewives of Camden Trilogy, a unique, interactive episodic play that satirizes the "urban talented tenth" and the spectacle of America's reality TV culture. Through this trilogy, we aim to create a thought-provoking, yet entertaining narrative that speaks to identity, class, race, and the cultural dynamics of our time.
Job Description:
We are seeking three emerging playwrights to assist us in completing The Real Housewives of Camden Trilogy. Each playwright will be commissioned to write one episode in the series. The plays will be interactive, allowing audience participation and engagement, and will explore themes of race, class, identity, and media representation, all while providing a satirical commentary on reality TV culture.
We are specifically looking for playwrights who are women of color, as we strongly believe in the power of telling our own stories and offering a platform for underrepresented voices in the theatre community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Write one episode (approximately 30-60 minutes) of The Real Housewives of Camden Trilogy, with a focus on the themes and satirical style outlined.
- Collaborate closely with the production team and other playwrights to ensure cohesion across the trilogy.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions, play development workshops, and rehearsals.
- Revise scripts based on feedback from the creative team and contribute to the overall vision of the production.
Qualifications:
- Emerging playwright with a passion for theatre and storytelling.
- Strong interest in satirical writing and social commentary, particularly related to race, class, identity, and media.
- Experience writing for live theatre is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and engage with diverse perspectives.
- A commitment to producing work that is thought-provoking, engaging, and entertaining.
We especially encourage applications from:
- Women of color.
- Emerging voices in the theatre community.
- Writers with a unique perspective on the intersection of race, media, and identity.
Compensation:
- Commissioned fee per episode will be discussed.
- Additional compensation for rehearsals, workshops, and participation in the production process.
How to Apply:
Please submit the following:
- A cover letter that introduces you, your background, and why you are passionate about telling stories that reflect your lived experiences.
- A writing sample (10-20 pages) that showcases your style, particularly any satirical or socially conscious work.
- A short proposal or idea for an episode in The Real Housewives of Camden Trilogy.
- A resume or bio with any relevant writing experience.
