Casting Performers Interactive Physical Theater Performance

The Upside-Down Tree

Post Date: Sep 26, 2025

Casting performers for a new interactive performance. We're seeking a small group of performers to support our core cast.

WE ARE:

Tyler and Lyra! We come from a shared background in devising, dance, music, composing, choreography, activism, education, and organizing. We're Pig Iron grads and have been developing this project for the last two years.

THE PROJECT IS:

Dreaming the Upside-Down Tree starts with a breath and ends in a dance party. Set in the sensory landscape of The Open Kitchen Sculpture Garden, this devised interactive performance shifts each night. As the audience enters they are invited to record sounds, words, and stories. These recordings are transformed in real time into music -- coughs become drum beats, yawns become melodies, heartfelt messages bloom into lyrics. Performers embody this soundscape, transforming it into movement and narrative. This one-of-a-kind experience of embodiment, community, and belonging weaves ritual, play, dance, and story together. It is ever changing, and doesn't exist without you.

The project is co-led by Tyler Leif Catanella (he/they) and Lyra Butler-Denman (she/her), with Sonali Sangeeta Balajee (she/her) our mentor in belonging and liberation, Giselle Genillard (she/her) our advisor in trauma and the nervous system, production manager Rachel Hunsinger (she/they), and our incredible cast of collaborators Sarah Sanford (she/her), Michael (Dola) Amendola (he/they), and Taylor Burgess (he/him).
