This is the new play by R. T. Bowersox, playwright/producer/director of the award-winning plays, Crossing the Veil, Moment of Grace, The Poetry of Hearts, and The Return. His screenplay, The Ritual Killer, was produced in 2023, starring Morgan Freeman and Cole Hauser, and his script, Beneath the Badge, won the script competition at the 2024 Cannes World Film Festival. This call is to solidify a cast for this new play who will participate in table work, rehearsals, and final production of the play. It is an opportunity to build a tight group that will be given the time and resources to really dig into the play and characters from reading through production.
READING/TABLE WORK: Wednesdays, September 10 and 17, 7 to 9 pm
REHEARSALS: Tentatively scheduled beginning October 6, minimum 4 evenings/days per week, depending upon actor's schedules. This may shift a week later, depending upon final determination of production dates.
PRODUCTION DATES: Either November 10 through 16, or November 17 through 23, 8 performances. All curtains at
7:30 pm except the 16th or 23rd, which will be a matinee, with curtain at 2 pm. If demand warrants it, both weeks may be used (a total of 16 performances), at which point, additional compensation will be made. There may be an opportunity to mount productions at other venues, in which case, additional contracts will be offered.
PLAY OVERVIEW:
While grieving on the night of the 50th anniversary of her long-lost love's death, a rich, elderly woman finds herself in a menacing situation when confronted by a young stranger claiming to be the reincarnation of her dead lover. The story takes place on a stormy night in the drawing room of an old southern estate house in Savannah, Georgia, setting a feel of mystery and a sense of the obscure – there are things we may not see, truths we may not know. Presenting at first like a suspense thriller, at its heart the play is a moving story of love and its power to cross time and impossibility to heal even the deepest wounds in very unexpected ways.
CHARACTERS (actors should be able to play the ages indicated):
HELEN MACMILLAN..........Female; Caucasian; 75; wealthy resident of Cargill House, Savannah; a woman with deep
emotional scars she has carried with grace for over 50 years; there is a longing in her she knows will never be fulfilled; cultured but not pretentious; smart but not arrogant; caring and present but somehow sadly hollow.
FLORA ANTHONY...............Female; African-American; 70's; has been Helen’s friend and companion for 50 years; practical, satisfied with life as it is...as long as she's had her Bible, her garden, and her kitchen, that's all she's needed.
DAVID CARGILL..................Male, mid-20’s; African-American; arrives at Cargill house expressing happiness to finally be home and with his lover and fiance, Helen; but how can he be who he claims to be if David Cargill died 50 years ago? How does he know so much about Helen and Flora? What is he really there for?
DOCTOR SYLVIA REYNOLDS...Female, 40’s; any ethnicity; a psychiatrist; proper, a bit controlled, but not without empathy; what brings her to Cargill House that night?
