About the Show:
Rent is a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical by Jonathan Larson that redefined modern musical theater. Set in New York City’s East Village in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the story follows a group of young artists, musicians, and dreamers as they navigate love, loss, poverty, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, Rent is a powerful and heartfelt celebration of life, friendship, and the enduring spirit of a community facing adversity. With an electrifying rock score and iconic songs like “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Bohème,” and “Take Me or Leave Me,” Rent continues to inspire audiences with its message of hope, inclusion, and living without regret.
This production invites performers of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to be part of a story that honors diversity, resilience, and the importance of chosen family.
A NOTE ABOUT STAGE INTIMACY
"Rent" is a show set in the early years of the AIDS epidemic, and includes hard conversations about drug use and sexual contact. Our production staff includes an intimacy coordinator to navigate these discussions and inform our staging and choreographic choices. Please read the descriptions of the characters carefully when determining which roles you would consider, and audition with the knowledge that physical contact, intimate and sexual touch, stage kissing, revealing costume choices, and talk about sexual and drug-related subject matter is necessary for the presentation of this show. No one will be asked at auditions to make physical contact or perform intimate scenes, but we ask that all auditioners come informed about the content of the show. As a cast and production team, we will do the work in rehearsals to create and evolve our collaborative, informed, consensual, safe, and truthful telling of this story.
