Play info:

Welcome to Priseaux, France, c. 1250 A.D.: The river flooded again last week. The chandler’s shop just burned to the ground. Nobody’s heard of the wheelbarrow yet. And Saint Foy, the patron of the local monastery, hasn’t worked a miracle in thirteen years. In other words, The Dark Ages still look pretty dark. All eyes turn to the Pope, whose promised visit will surely encourage other pilgrims to make the trek and restore the abbey to its former glory. That is, until a church rival claims to possess the relics of Saint Foy – and “their” bones are working miracles. All seems lost until the destitute monks take a lesson from a larcenous, one-eyed minstrel, who teaches them an outrageous new way to pay old debts.

Cast of Characters:

Charles, Abbot of Priseaux (50 +) – kind, but world-weary; resigned to his lot; calm; level-headed but idealistic.
Brother Martin, his second in command (40+) – fed-up; jaded; goes by the book, but realistic.
Brother Olf, a novice (flexible age, but younger than Charles and Martin) – big and lumbering; dim-witted but with a good heart and good intentions.
Brother Felix, a novice (30-ish) – solid worker and dedicated to his faith but still has an eye for the ladies.
Peasant Woman, from the village (40s-50s) – out for what she can get; suspicious of the monks.
Jack, a one-eyed minstrel (30-ish) – cynical but charming rogue; thinks fast on his feet; sings; plays guitar and juggles (doesn’t have to be good, but actor must be willing to give it the old college try!) (instructor for both will be provided)
Marie, Jack’s wife, of sorts (20s-30s) – sweet; fun; dances and sings; somewhat athletic role – actor cannot be claustrophobic!; must be okay with being carried by other actors.
Agatha, Abbess of Bernay (50+) – no nonsense; tough as nails; not to be trifled with.
