Seeking actors for roles in James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, a world premiere adaptation by Benjamin Sprunger and Paul Oakley Stovall, and directed by Paul Oakley Stovall.

Quintessence rehearses and performs at the Sedgwick Theater, 7137 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119. Rehearsals take place Tuesday - Sunday (10am - 6pm).
Actor 1 – David – A 20 something all-American with blond hair looking to find himself in Europe. Uses his charm and intelligence to borrow money in order to continue living in Paris. While his girlfriend is away in Spain, he has a love affair with Giovanni.
Actor 2 – Giovanni – A 20 something Italian emigree working as a bartender in a gay bar. Wandered to Paris after the still born birth of his first child. Emotional, dark, with a biting wit.
Actor 3 - Hella / Sue - David’s longtime girlfriend. A 20 something American woman, effervescent, well-read, modern, and stylish looking to find herself in Europe. / A lonely American ex-patriot and contemporary of David’s.
Actor 4 - Jacques / Dad – A wealthy, gay, middle-aged, Belgian-born businessman. Infatuated with David, humorous, insightful, and overwhelmed by loneliness and self-pity. / An all-American dad who struggles with alcohol, women, and being a good father.
Actor 5 – Guillaume – A middle-aged descendent of an aristocratic French family. The flamboyant and manipulative owner of the Parisian gay bar where Giovanni works.
Actor 6 - Caretaker / Clothilde / Aunt Ellen – A middle-aged Provencal house keeper / an infamous Parisian restauranteur and de facto godmother to Giovanni / David’s aunt, a middle-aged, middle class American woman, opinionated, judgmental, with a blunt demeanor.
Actor 7 - Joey / Patron / Sailor / Taxi Driver – A young man of color from David’s past who harbors feelings for David but is also resentful toward him.
Actor 8 - Flaming Princess – A trans, non-binary, or gender non-conforming denizen of Guillaume's bar. A seer.
