Submissions and Auditions: Bright Star

 The Candlelight Theatre, located in historic Ardentown, Delaware (30 minutes from Center City, Philadelphia) is seeking non-union, singer/dancer/actors for its upcoming production of Bright Star which runs March 15 to April 19, 2025. Director -Rebecca May Flowers, Choreographer – Jessica Bostock, and music director – Alexa Wilder. The Candlelight Theatre encourages performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as performers with disabilities to attend auditions.

Auditions will be held by appointment on Monday, December 9th 6:00 – 10:00 pm and Tuesday, December 10th 6:00 – 10:00. Callbacks will be scheduled if needed. Rehearsals begin on or around Tuesday, January 21, 2025, through Friday, March 14th, 2025. The show runs March 15 to April 19, 2025. 

 Inspired by a true story, BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful. With book by Steve Martin, Bright Star features a Tony®-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Bright Star is presented through special arrangement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW).

Character Breakdown

 Ensemble members will be incorporated throughout the show and should be comfortable as movers. Performers of all genders and ethnicities are encouraged to submit. 

 Alice Murphy - late 30’s or so, also plays herself in her late teens - Mezzo-Soprano - intelligent, rebellious, adventurous. Must be comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles. 

 Margo - early 20s - Soprano - bookish and romantic, highly intelligent and devoted. Always helping someone. In love with Billy.

 Lucy - 20s - Soprano - ambitious, forthright, knows what she wants, great sense of humor. 

Mama Murphy/Ensemble - 40s-50s, also plays herself in her late 60s-70s - Mezzo-Soprano - Alice’s mother, hardworking, compassionate, sensible.

Florence/Ensemble - 20s - Mezzo-Soprano - works in Margo’s bookstore, best friends with Edna.

Edna/Ensemble - 20s - Mezzo-Soprano - works in Margo’s bookstore, best friends with Florence.

Billy Cane - early 20s - Tenor - a dreamer, an idealist, a small town boy come home from the war and ready to start over. In love with Margo, but he’s still figuring that out. 

Jimmy Ray Dobbs - late 30’s-early 40’s, also plays himself at 20 - Tenor - charming, independent thinker, intelligent, a deep well of emotion, wants to live outside the lines. 

Mayor Dobbs - 40s - Baritone - Jimmy’s father, imposing and controlling, he has a clear vision. 

Daddy Murphy/Ensemble - 50s-60s, plays himself in his 70s-80s - Baritone - poor, proud, disciplinarian.

Daddy Cane/Dr. Norquist/Ensemble - 50s-60s, plays himself in his 70s-80s - Tenor - kind-hearted, gentle father/local doctor with typical views of the time, a little pushy.

Daryl/Ensemble - 20s - Tenor - funny with dry sense of humor, smart but unsure of his place.

Stanford/Ensemble - 40s - Baritone - Mayor Dobb’s loyal assistant, a true lackey.

3-4 actor/movers to round out the ensemble.

For auditions, please prepare 16 - 32 bars in the style of the show.  Songs from the show are acceptable. An accompanist will be provided. Please provide clearly marked sheet music. No recorded tracks please. Be prepared to dance.  Readings will be provided. Please come with headshot and resume stapled together. 

No calls to the theater, please.

 

Salary

All roles are open and paid. Housing is not provided. Performers may also have the opportunity to work in the restaurant during the run of the show to supplement their income.
