Position Title: Assistant Technical Director

Position Dates: Full Time, generally Monday - Friday 9a-5p, with occasional evenings and weekends, starting as soon as reasonable.

Salary: $45,000 - $50,000/year - Salary is determined by how many of the listed qualifications the applicant meets.

Philadelphia Scenic Works (PSW) is the nation’s first independent, non-profit (501c3) scene shop. We work with arts organizations all over the Greater Philadelphia area to build projects that advance their missions. At the same time, we are investing in building a healthy, sustainable workforce, and innovative resource sharing.  We work on 30-50 projects a year mostly for small non-profit theater companies and high schools.

About The Position

This position serves as second in command to the Technical Director. They will support administrative and logistical operations, lead crews, and serve as a carpenter on the shop floor. Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a key member of the carpentry team building scenery in the shop
  • Work with the Technical DIrector on shop draftings, quotes, and logistics such as staffing, trucking, and purchasing
  • Develop a familiarity with each design to be able to answer questions and run certain installations with or without the Technical Director. 
  • Work with the Shop Foreman to delegate and manage build projects
  • Problem solve and develop solutions for each design. 
  • Keep works spaces clean and organized
  • Work with the Technical Director and Shop Foreman to improve functionality of workspaces through regular improvements and organization.

Required Qualifications 

Candidates should meet all of these qualifications to apply.

  • Demonstrated experience in the construction of scenery using a variety theatrical woodworking techniques.
  • Ability to read and draft ground plans and shop drawings
  • Ability to comfortably drive up to a 26’ Box Truck
  • Basic rigging skills
  • Good teamwork skills
