Title: Rise and Shine: It's Wellness Time
Production Type: Live Interactive Performance
Target Audience: Grades 1-5 (Ages 6-11)
Performance Locations: Schools throughout the South Jersey area, primarily based in Camden, NJ
Auditions and rehearsals will take place at Academy Hall, 27 S Black Horse Pike, Blackwood, NJ.

Seeking: 4 Actors (any age/gender/ethnicity) and 1 stage manager/technician (any age/gender/ethnicity) for this exciting piece which is currently in development.

Join us for "Rise & Shine: It's Wellness Time!" Created by Sarah Gafgen & Peter Andrew Danzig and Co-Directed by Erica Harr, at Mainstage Center for the Arts! Rise and Shine: It's Wellness Time is an engaging, educational, and interactive 50-60 minute performance aimed at promoting mental, physical, and emotional wellness to young audiences. The show will be performed in schools throughout the South Jersey area, with a focus on Camden, NJ.

This production is currently in development with the support of The Horizon Foundation of NJ and the William G. Rohrer Foundation. If you are passionate about working with children and have a flair for interactive, energetic performances, we’d love to hear from you!

Please prepare a short comedic monologue, if you consider yourself to be a strong singer please link to any footage you would like us to see in the form below as we may incorporate some singing into the piece, not all performers will need to sing.

Character Breakdown:

  • Host 1 – Morning Show Host (Any Gender, Age, Ethnicity):
    A charismatic and high-energy character who serves as one of the main hosts of the morning show. This host is the driving force of the show, engaging the audience with fun facts, humor, and a passion for wellness. The role requires quick wit, strong improv skills, and an approachable, enthusiastic personality.
  • Host 2 – Co-Host (Any Gender, Age, Ethnicity):
    The co-host brings balance to the show with a slightly more playful or quirky personality. This character’s role is to complement the other host and help guide the audience through various wellness-themed segments, like exercise routines, mindfulness practices, and healthy snack tips. Must be energetic, quick on their feet, and able to keep children engaged through humor and interaction.
  • Announcer (Any Gender, Age, Ethnicity):
    A versatile character who plays the role of an announcer/DJ. This actor also doubles as several special guest characters throughout the show, changing costumes and personalities to fit the role of a guest expert on wellness topics. Strong physicality and adaptability are key, as this actor will switch between multiple roles in quick succession.
  • Producer (Any Gender, Age, Ethnicity):
    Another versatile actor who takes on the Producer duties and also portrays a variety of special guest characters. This role requires creativity, as the actor will change costumes and personas throughout the performance, becoming various experts (e.g., fitness guru, nutritionist, mindfulness expert) to teach kids about wellness. This actor must be quick-thinking, skilled in physical comedy, and have strong improvisational abilities.

Production Timeline:

  • Audition Date: Friday, January 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Workshop/Readings (required):
    • 3 to be scheduled based on availability between February 17, 2025 and March 21, 2025 (Daytimes)
  • Rehearsals (required): March 24- April 11, 2025 (daytimes, ideally Monday/Wednesday/Friday 10-2)
  • Performances: Begin April 14, 2025, and run through the end of June 2025 (dates are scheduled based on school requests).
    • Guaranteed Performances: 6 performances in 2024-2025 school year, goals to continue performances in 2025-2026 school year.


Qualifications:

  • Comfort with performing for and engaging young audiences (grades 1-5)
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a creative team environment
  • Must be local to or able to travel within the South Jersey area
  • Availability for all rehearsal dates, workshops, and performances as determined by the creative team.
  • Willingness to assist in loading and unloading the van with materials and setting up the set/costumes/equipment for the performance at each performance venue.
