This new award will recognize performances happening outdoors in public spaces from May 27 - September 22, 2019, and will be awarded at the Barrymore Awards Ceremony and Celebration in Fall 2019.
Rachel Camp, chair of the Barrymore Oversight Committee, shares “The 2018 Theatre Philadelphia survey and the community forums held in early 2019 indicated a strong desire for the Barrymore Awards to represent more of what makes Philadelphia unique. Recognizing this category of work - that is often led by values of accessibility and community engagement - is a good start responding to that desire, in a way that promotes new corners of our enormous community. This is theater built precisely by and for the Greater Philadelphia area.”
The Outdoor Theatre Award was crafted with input from producers of summer outdoor theatre, a subcommittee of volunteer theatre professionals working on issues of eligibility for the Barrymore Awards, and through conversations with the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy. The award invites any work that is professional in spirit and performing within a 35-mile radius of Philadelphia’s City Hall to submit for consideration. A group of peer judges will attend all participating productions, and then collectively select 5 nominees from which to vote on a recipient.
The eligibility subcommittee of the Barrymore Oversight Committee includes LaNeshe Miller White, co-founder and Executive Director of Theatre in the X. “ I am so excited that Theatre Philadelphia has chosen to acknowledge this city's outdoor theater productions,” says Miller White. “This will allow for recognition of great work happening in non-traditional spaces. I strongly believe in bringing theater to the community and I am so happy that a company doing this kind of work will be honored alongside their peers in October.”
To be submit a production for consideration to the Outdoor Theatre Award, producers should complete this short form about their production by May 27th. Productions will be asked for a $100 administrative fee and to recommend a judge from their artistic circle to attend all eligible productions during the summer.
The new Outdoor Theatre Award is one of a variety of changes that will be implemented for the 2019-20 adjudication season including a move to specialized judging panels and two pools of stipends for volunteer judges. Additional changes regarding eligibility for productions will be announced in mid-June prior to the start of the season on July 1.
