Quintessence is accepting resumes and headshot submissions for Paul Oakley Stovall's Written By Phillis, directed by Cheryl Lynn Bruce.

First rehearsal - 4/11/2023. Opening - 5/13/2023. Closing - 6/4/2023. Possible extension - 6/11/2023

Actors to play and/or cover all roles.

Phillis Wheatley (20s) This play follows the life of Phillis Wheatley (considered the first African American to publish a book of poetry) from her childhood in slavery to her death in her early 30s. Through her poems and letters, we explore the life of one of the most renowned poets in 18th century America. Experience in the performance of verse and heightened language required.

Ignatius Sancho (40s - 50s) Celebrated as "the extraordinary Nergo," was a succesful shopkeeper, writer and theorist. The first British African to vote in Britain and a noted an abolitionist.

Anne Osborne / Obour Tanner (30s - 50s) - A Black woman born in the Caribean, a succesful London book dealer and wife to Ignatius Sancho / Founding member of the African Female Benevolent Society, Phillis' correspondent and "agent."

Susanna Wheatley, and others (50s - 60s) Mistress to Phillis. A Congregationalist who educated Phillis and promoted her poetry internationally. Suffering from a long illness.

John Wheatley / George Washington (50s - 60s) - Husband to Susanna Wheatley. A merchant, money lender and constable in Boston / Commander and Chief, and first president of the United States.

Nathaniel Wheatley (20s) - Son of Susanna and John Wheatley. A tailor and merchant. Friend and companion to Phillis on their travels to London.

Gov. Thomas Huchinson / Gilbert Imlay (50s - 60s)  Two American Businessmen. One a historian, the other a foreign diplomat.

Rehearsals and performances take place at 7137 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119. Rehearsals are 10am - 6pm Tuesday - Sunday.
