The Candlelight Theatre

The Candlelight Theatre, located in historic Ardentown, Delaware (30 minutes from Center City, Philadelphia) is seeking dynamic, non-union, singers, actors, and dancers, of all types, and ethnicity for its upcoming production of The Fantasticks which runs July 13 – August 25, 2024. Directed by Peter Reynolds.  

 Auditions will be held by appointment on Sunday April 7, 2024, 7 – 10pm and Monday, April 8, 2024, 6 – 10pm. Rehearsals begin on or around Monday, May 20, 2024, through Friday, July 12, 2024. 

 The Fantasticks is a magical journey, part fairy tale, part fable and entirely enchanting. With book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, it has the distinction of being the longest-running musical in the history of theater. Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, MTI.

Character Breakdown

 El Gallo - Sophisticated. Narrator of the show. Charismatic presence with a hint of mystery. Strong baritone. 

 The Girl (Luisa) - A button-makers daughter. Young, innocent ingenue. A romantic idealist. Strong singer, effortless soprano.

 The Boy (Matt) - Young, innocent and searching for love and adventure. Naive, with a false bravado. Strong singer, bari-tenor.

 The Boy's Father (Hucklebee) - Boisterous. A meticulous gardener who fakes a feud with Bellomy in hopes of getting their children to fall in love. Character actor.The Girl's Father (Bellomy) - A fastidious button-maker and picky gardener who schemes with Hucklebee to unite their children. Character Actor.

 The Actor (Henry) - Aging, over-the- top thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare. A commedia dell'arte clown. His world is the stage . Character Actor

 The Man Who Dies (Mortimer) - Henry's sidekick. Former actor who specializes in stage deaths. Character Actor

The Mute - A speechless presence who acts as the "invisible" stage assistant, dancer. 


How To Apply

Please send pictures and resumes to Bob Kelly, Artistic Director  [email protected] and indicate your preference for either a Sunday or Monday audition slot. Calls will be made to arrange audition times for selected applicants.

For auditions, please prepare 16 - 32 bars in the style of the show.  Readings will be provided. Please come with headshot and resume stapled together, do not send in advance.

No calls to the theater, please.


All roles are open and paid. Performers may also have the opportunity to work in the restaurant during the run of the show to supplement their income. No calls to the theatre, please
