MARGARITAVILLE Extras and External Understudies

Walnut Street Theatre is currently seeking local non-union actors to be on-stage Extras and External Understudies for all roles in ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE this spring. Lisa Stevens is making her Mainstage debut as director/choreographer. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin on March 7, 2023 with performances running from March 28-May 7, 2023.


EXTRAS – All ages, gender-identifies, ethnicities, body types, and voice parts to play non-speaking background roles as tourists, island locals, wedding guests, bar patrons, frat guys, and more. Also understudy larger roles (likely dancer or principals) from within the cast. Should have strong pop singing voices.

ENSEMBLE U/S – All ages, gender-identifies, ethnicities, body types, to understudy the Ensemble dancers. Must dance well in musical theatre, contemporary, and hip-hop styles and have strong pop singing voices.

TULLY U/S –20s-30s male-identifying, any ethnicity. A singer-songwriter – pop tenor. A charming, humorous, and sexy womanizer. He’s content with the life he’s chosen as the singer/bartender at a tropical resort, until he meets a vacationer who upends his heart. Role may require shirtless. Guitar playing ideal, but NOT required as an understudy.

RACHEL U/S –20s – 30s female-identifying, any ethnicity. Fully committed to being a serious scientist and helping the environment. Intense, very book smart, values logic over emotion, and a loyal friend. Soprano with strong Pop-Belt.

TAMMY U/S- Mid 20s-30s female-identifying, any ethnicity. Tammy is best friends with Rachel. She is cheerful, comedic, and always ready for a good time. Very strong and high belter.

BRICK U/S – Male, any ethnicity, 30s. A very comedic bartender. Comes across in the script as oafish and not the brightest, but sensitive and with a big heart. Best friends with Tully. Comedic Pop Bari-Tenor.

MARLEY U/S- 40s + African-American or Caribbean female-identifying. No-nonsense and assertive; witty sense of humor. She runs the resort and keeps everyone in check. Speaks with an island accent. Soprano with gospel Belt.

J.D. U/S –60s + character man. A Vietnam war veteran who comes to the island in search of joy and peace. A funny old man who is crotchety, endearing, and losing his vision and hearing. Described as a good-natured drunkard. Baritone. Ukulele playing ideal, but not required as an understudy.

Artists who are unfamiliar with Non-Union Extras and/or Understudies from within the Walnut Street Theatre School’s education performance program, details are provided below.
• Are in the cast learning as part of the ensemble and perform in the show every performance / 8 shows per week. Rehearse full-time 6 days a week, plus tech before the run.
• Roles are non-speaking/dancing tracks and understudy larger roles within the cast.
• Attend understudy rehearsals throughout the show’s run.
• Receive an expense stipend of $300/week for the duration of the production.
o Additional Rate: $50 a show if you perform as an understudy.
o Scholarship for free class at the Walnut Street Theatre School.
o EMC points if desired.

• Are “On Call” for a specific role in the cast and must be in town for the duration of the run of MARGARITAVILLE – Mar 7 – May 7.
• Learn/observe as much of the rehearsal process as you’d like on your own.
• Attend Final Dress Rehearsal– March 26
• 6 required understudy rehearsals during the show’s run –3/30, 3/31, 4/4, 4/7, 4/11, and 4/12- from 1-6PM
• Receive an expense stipend of $315 to cover any expenses in participating (parking for a day, etc.)
o Additional Rate: $50 a show if you perform as an understudy.
o Scholarship for a free class at the Walnut Street Theatre School.
o EMC points if desired.
